Forster Products Field Headspace Gage Features The Forster Field Headspace Gage is machined to precise SAAMI-referenced dimensions so that a rifle chambered in 7.62x54 Russian can be checked with confidence rather than guesswork. If a rifle s bolt closes on this Field gage the chamber is at or beyond the maximum safe headspace dimension which signals that the rifle should be inspected by a competent gunsmith before it is fired again. This is distinct from a GO or NOGO gage which bracket the normal factory chambering range rather than the danger threshold. Forster s painstaking manufacturing tolerances mean the gage itself is a reliable reference rather than a variable in the measurement. Because unsupported or stretched brass fired in an over-headspaced chamber can rupture and vent gas backward toward the shooter a Field gage is a cheap insurance policy against a potentially serious malfunction. It is especially useful for shooters working with military surplus 7.62x54 Russian rifles where decades of use and varying chamber tolerances make a safety check worthwhile. The gage requires no special tools to use beyond the rifle s own action making it accessible to home gunsmiths and handloaders alike. The Forster Field Headspace Gage gives 7.62x54 Russian rifle owners a straightforward way to confirm their chamber remains within safe operating limits.
