Cold air feels different once the boat gets moving. The AFTCO Reaper Tactical Zip-Up Jacket in Charcoal pairs a three-layer stretch ripstop softshell with warm Hexatron(TM) fleece lining, giving anglers a windproof layer that moves with them while casting, working a lure, or reaching for the net. Its full-length zipper makes it easy to adjust coverage as a chilly launch turns into an active day on the water. An integrated neck gaiter adds coverage without another loose accessory to keep track of, while the adjustable shock cord helps secure the fit. The understated Charcoal color works just as well around town as it does on the boat. When a Sweatshirt Is Not Enough Choose the Reaper when wind protection matters as much as warmth. The softshell construction provides a more purposeful barrier for exposed shorelines and boat rides than a basic sweatshirt, while the stretch fabric makes it a practical choice for repeated casts and active fishing. DWR water repellency helps shed light moisture, but this is not a substitute for dedicated waterproof rain gear in sustained rain. The Right Pick If... You fish cool mornings, breezy afternoons, or fall and winter trips and want a zip-up layer you can adjust throughout the day. Wear it over a base layer in cool weather, or incorporate it into a layered setup when temperatures drop further. For warm, still conditions, a lighter performance shirt is the better choice. Best for: bass fishing with moving baits or jigs, shoreline casting, inshore fishing, and cool-weather offshore trips. Its benefit is weather comfort across techniques, not a species-specific feature. Details That Earn Their Place on the Boat Three-layer stretch ripstop softshell: combines wind protection with freedom of movement. If you plan to wear additional layers underneath, check fit with those layers in mind rather than choosing solely by your usual T-shirt size. Tackle Express Tips Before leaving the dock, adjust the hood and neck coverage so you are not fighting loose fabric once the boat is moving. Use the front zipper to release excess warmth during active casting, then close it before an exposed boat ride. Pack a separate waterproof shell when sustained rain is in the forecast. Windproof comfort and waterproof storm protection serve different jobs. A Few Things to Know Before You Go Is the Reaper a waterproof rain jacket? No. Its DWR finish provides water repellency for light moisture. Choose dedicated waterproof rain gear for prolonged rain.
