About the 12 Gauge Chambering As a 12 Gauge shotgun it covers a wide range of loads, from light target shells to heavier hunting loads. Always check the chamber length marked on the barrel and match your shells to it, and pattern your gun with the loads you plan to hunt with before the season opens. Getting It Range Ready Read the owner manual that comes with the shotgun before handling it, and confirm it is unloaded every time you pick it up. Start your first session at a short distance to get on paper, then move back in steps while you refine your zero or point of aim. Shoot from a stable rest, let the barrel cool between strings, and write down the load, distance and group size so you can repeat your results later in the season. Care and Cleaning Before the first trip to the range, clean the bore and chamber to remove any preservative from the factory, then check that all screws are snug. After shooting, run a cleaning rod with a patch and solvent through the bore from the chamber end, follow with dry patches, and wipe exterior metal with a light coat of oil. Store the shotgun unloaded in a dry, secure place, ideally a safe with a dehumidifier, and keep ammunition stored separately.
