The Story Behind Dr John Riker Just in advance of the battle of Trenton, Christmas Day 1776, the colonial army under George Washington gathered on the highway outside of town. The troops woke up a nearby farmhouse where Dr. John Riker and his family lived. Learning the army was marching into Trenton that morning Dr Riker joined himself to the march in case he could be of some service. During the engagement, James Monroe (future US President) was shot in the shoulder and suffered an arterial bleed. Dr Riker who was nearby was able to immediately address the wound and save the life of James Monroe. This belt tourniquet carrier is named in honor of the American Spirit and the heroic actions of Dr John Riker.
