Introduced in 1983, the Series 80 version added an internal firing-pin safety to the traditional design. Main features Manufacturer: Colt's Manufacturing Company, historically based in Hartford, Connecticut. Type: Full-size, semi-automatic pistol. Action: Single-action, recoil-operated. Typical caliber: .45 ACP, although Series 80 Government Models were also offered in other calibers. Barrel length: 5 inches on the standard full-size Government Model. Capacity: Typically 7 rounds in older .45 ACP versions; some versions use 8-round magazines. Construction: Steel frame and slide on the standard Government Model. Safety systems: Frame-mounted thumb safety, grip safety, and Series 80 firing-pin safety. Why is the Series 80 notable? The Series 80 retains the familiar 1911 styling, slim grip profile, and single-action trigger. Its distinguishing feature is an internal mechanism that blocks firing-pin movement until the trigger is pulled, adding a layer of drop-safety protection.
