Why Buy It Chambered in 12 Gauge26-inch barrelSingle-shot designMossy Oak Bottomlands finishBuilt by Savage Arms, an American gunmaker since 1894 About the Savage 301 Turkey Savage Arms has been building firearms in the United States for well over a century, and the company is known for accurate, practical guns at fair prices. The 301 Turkey carries that approach forward with a straightforward design that is easy to learn, easy to maintain and ready for regular use at the range or in the field. Whether this is your first shotgun or an addition to a well-used collection, it is a sensible choice that should give years of service with basic care. About the 12 Gauge Chambering As a 12 Gauge shotgun it covers a wide range of loads, from light target shells to heavier hunting loads. Check the chamber length marked on the barrel, match your shells to it, and pattern the gun with the loads you plan to hunt with before the season opens. Getting It Range Ready Read the owner manual that comes with the shotgun before handling it, and make sure it is unloaded every time you pick it up. Start your first session at a short distance to get on paper, then move back in steps while you refine your zero or point of aim. Shoot from a stable rest, let the barrel cool between strings, and write down the load, distance and group size so you can repeat your results later. Care and Cleaning Before the first trip to the range, clean the bore and chamber to remove any preservative from the factory, then check that all screws are snug. After shooting, run a cleaning rod with a patch and solvent through the bore from the chamber end, follow with dry patches, and wipe exterior metal with a light coat of oil. Store the shotgun unloaded in a dry, secure place, ideally a safe with a dehumidifier, and keep ammunition stored separately. Choosing Ammunition and Accessories Pick ammunition that matches the 12 Gauge marking on the barrel, and buy enough of one load to practice with and to hunt or compete with, so your zero does not change between sessions. A good sling, a solid rest or bipod for longer shots, quality eye and ear protection and a hard or soft case for transport round out a practical setup. If you plan to mount an optic, choose rings or a mount that fit both the scope tube and the base on the receiver, and torque screws to the values the maker lists. Who It Is For This shotgun suits hunters who want a dependable everyday shotgun, shooters building skills at the range, and anyone who values a proven American design. It is simple enough for a newer shooter to learn quickly, yet capable enough that experienced owners will keep it in regular use for seasons to come.
