That mechanism allows the handguard to be removed and reinstalled without tools making it fast to swap configurations for different mission or competition setups. A continuous top rail spans the full 13.8 inch length giving the shooter a consistent mounting surface for optics and accessories from the receiver to the muzzle end. The 1.34 inch internal diameter provides generous clearance around the barrel and gas system while keeping the overall handguard profile slim in the hand.
