HELSTAR F2A(R) is a helmetmounted multifunction overt/covert personnel marking device combined with active IFF interrogation acquisition, response, and alert capabilities. F2 retains the original HELSTAR 6A(R) form factor, along with four marking functions in two separate operating modes (e.g. overt and covert). Discrete userdefined functions are available in White, Green, Blue, Red, Amber and IR. The user can select combinations of color/emissions, steady or flash operation, and intensity levels. F2 features field reprogramming capability, enabling users to change each of the four preset functions ondemand with a wireless handheld reprogramming device. A default feature returns the unit back to original factory settings. When the F2 is interrogated by specified military lasers, the IFF features interpret the signal, and responds back to the interrogator immediately with a userspecified flashback pattern in IR. A simultaneous alert is sent to the user/wearer via a vibrating pad routed by a small cable to the inside the helmet. F2 IFF features can protect the user/wearer with more than a full hemisphere of lineofsight sensitivity which has been field tested and verified out to 800+ meters. F2 IFF features are always ON when the device is operating in any of the four marker functions. As the mission environment changes, the IFF features can be selected ON when the emitters are OFF-or all functions including the IFF can be turned OFF. A thumbactivated operating status switch to the left of the main switch provides immediate confirmation that the IFF is active. Actual operating status is unambiguously confirmed by determining the positions of the two sliding switches with gloved hand. F2 exceeds the FAA 3statue mile visibility requirement in the white/ strobe mode. It is shock and vibration resistant, dustproof and has been tested waterproof in open sea conditions to 130 feet (laboratory tested to 300 feet).
