What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying: “The SUM’TEC is my do-it-all mountaineering axe. I’ve used it on everything from steep couloirs to glacier approaches—it’s light in hand, but still feels bombproof when swinging into ice. The modular head makes it easy to tweak for the day’s objective, and that TRIGREST handrest adjustment is a total game changer.”For mountaineers who move fluidly from glacier crossings to steep, technical terrain, the Petzl SUM’TEC Ice Axe delivers a perfect balance of versatility and strength. It’s designed to evolve with your objective—equally at home plunging into firm snow as it is swinging into hard alpine ice. The SUM’TEC’s modular ALPEN ADAPT system allows you to customize every element, from the pick to the head and handrest, tailoring performance to the climb. The included ICE pick provides dependable penetration across ice types, while the TRIGREST handrest adjusts quickly—no tools needed—for seamless transitions between piolet-canne and climbing modes. The curved shaft improves clearance and swing accuracy, yet remains straight enough for secure planting and balanced walking. Whether you choose the adze or hammer version, this axe brings precision engineering to demanding alpine missions.
