Classic "Pre-Model 28" Collectors' Features
Because these revolvers were manufactured during Smith & Wesson's golden era of classic craftsmanship, collectors look for several defining period characteristics:
Pinned & Recessed (P&R): Features a pin securing the barrel into the frame ( pinned barrel ) and counterbored cylinder chambers that completely enclose the rim of the cartridge case ( recessed cylinder ).
5-Screw / 4-Screw Frame Construction:
Early 1954-1955 production models are "5-Screw" frames (four sideplate screws plus one screw in front of the trigger guard).
Around 1955-1956, S&W eliminated the upper sideplate screw, turning mid-to-late pre-28 production into "4-Screw" variations.
Matte Finish & Sandblasted Top Strap: Unlike the mirror-polished finish and fine top-strap checkering of the original .357 Magnum (Pre-Model 27), the Highway Patrolman features a bead-blasted, non-glare top strap and a low-luster satin blued finish designed for working law enforcement tools.
Roll Markings: The right side of the barrel is roll-marked "S.&W. .357 MAGNUM", while the left side reads "HIGHWAY PATROLMAN".
Serial Number Prefix: Serial numbers fall in the S-series (typically S103500 through S176000 range for the pre-model era). The Smith & Wesson "Pre-Model 28"-officially roll-marked as the .357 Highway Patrolman-is a heavy-frame, double-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum / .38 Special. Introduced in 1954, this model was conceived as a utility, high-durability service revolver for state police agencies and law enforcement officers who needed the power of the large N-frame .357 Magnum (the Model 27) without the costly cosmetic polishing and fine checkering of the flagship deluxe line.
The "Pre-Model 28" designation applies specifically to examples produced between 1954 and 1957, prior to Smith & Wesson stamping official model numbers in the yoke cut
