Browning redesigned and scaled down the BBR action to make it roughly a pound lighter, launching the original A-Bolt in 1985. It featured a fast 60-degree short-lift bolt angle, a 3-lug bolt design, a tang-mounted safety, and a unique detachable box magazine on a hinged floorplate.
