The Contraband Crab, designed by Drew Chicone, is a highly effective permit and bonefish fly built around a unique and resourceful idea-the crab carapace was originally inspired by the texture of a Brillo pad. This gave the fly a durable, mottled body material that mimics the rough, natural look of a crab shell while standing up to repeated abuse in saltwater environments. Like many of Chicone&&';;s designs, the Contraband Crab balances durability with realism, making it a reliable option for wary permit, while also proving effective as a downsized crab imitation for larger bonefish.
