The Colt Dragoon Revolvers were a series of continuous improvements on a revolutionary but flawed design: The Colt Walker. One of the Walker’s most notable complaints was its weight, leading it to be a saddle mounted weapon rather than a sidearm one would carry on the belt. The Dragoons countered this problem with weight reducing qualities like shortened barrels and slimmer grips, making them considerably easier for carrying in a belt mounted holster. Dragoons also were built with improved cylinders and strengthened loading leavers to significantly reduce the chances of misfires. These improvements to the design made them a massive success among the civilian markets during the 1850s, and when the American Civil war broke out in 1861, they were quickly put into military service for both the North and South. Just like their predecessor the Colt Walker, the Colt Dragoons had a reputation for being incredibly powerful at close range, and their accuracy was sometimes compared to that of a rifle.
