The first official American flag, known as "the Betsy Ross flag" is the most debated flag in American history. Adopted June 14, 1777 (later to become Flag Day), Continental Congress resolved "that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation."
