The pistol's top-break design was soon recognized by U.S. Army Major George Schofield who made modifications to meet the cavalry's needs. Smith & Wesson incorporated those changes and the Model 3 was renamed "The Schofield Revolver." Despite its advantages it was overshadowed by the Colt Single Action Army in popularity with the U.S. Army. However the Russian Government adopted the Model 3 with the Czar ordering 41000 units.The reputation of the Schofield Model 3 extended beyond military use and quickly found its way into the hands of civilians lawmen and outlaws alike. Notorious outlaw Jesse James was known to carry a Schofield for much of his criminal career and ironically was killed with one. Another famous user of the Model 3 Schofield was the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp who used one to great success during the Gunfight at the O.K.
