The name 'draughts' derives from the verb to draw or to move, whereas 'checkers' derives from the checkered board which the game is played on.This checkers board is etched on a spalted maple slice, or cookie. Since all cookies are unique, the exact dimensions may vary but it will be approximately 12" in diameter. The pieces are made from maple, and etched to match the color of the board.How to PlayCheckers is played by two opponents, on opposite sides of the gameboard. One player has dark pieces; the other has light pieces. A move consists of diagonally moving a piece to an adjacent unoccupied square. If the adjacent square contains an opponent's piece, and the square immediately beyond it is vacant, the piece may be jumped, or captured, and removed from the game.Only the dark squares of the checkers board are used. A piece may move only diagonally into an unoccupied square. When available, capturing is mandatory in most official rules, although some rule variations make capturing optional.
