This knife has a Lockback mechanism that securely locks the blade open when in use. This knife was designed as a half-size version of the 110 Folding Hunter, thus the name, The 55. Ebony wood was initially introduced on the 110 and 112 models in the 1960s, but in the 1990s, federal regulations on endangered woods led Buck to utilize a resin-treated wood. Harvested under Taylor's successful conservation project, Buck now employs the use of ebony, a natural material with beautiful grain patterns that provide customers with a nearly indestructible knife handle. Lockback Lockback folding knives have a mechanism that locks the blade in the open position, activated by opening the blade. A lock back gets its name from a rocker (rocking lock bar) partially visible on top of the knife. Opening the edge causes the rocker to lock against the blade, so it locks open. Pushing down the rocker on top of the handle releases it and enables the user to close the blade. Lockbacks require two-hand closing, though some are one-hand openers.
