GearChase.com took some time with Rob Reinfurt the site manager for GearTrade.com to answer a few personal questions about GearTrade.com.

We constantly hear that GearTrade.com has some sort of affiliate partnership with Backcountry.com can you set the record straight?

Backcountry uses our service to liquidate all of their returns. The previous owners of Backcounty.com own GearTrade.com. They have always been separate entities. Backcountry.com also decrease their items prices on a daily basis which is cool. So watch for falling prices from them.

When, how, and why was GearTrade.com started?

It was started in 1999. A group of gearheads, outdoornuts and entrepreneurs realized the need for a marketplace where people could buy and sell their outdoor gear.

What was the first product sold?

I was not around for this. I started in 2005 when the new owners purchased the company

What were the greatest challenges and rewards when the business started?

The challenge is getting people to list their outdoor gear. To get up, look in their closet or garage and decide to part with their unused gear then take the next step and sell it on GearTrade.

Can you tell us anything interesting or unique about your company culture/environment?

We are skiers. We all came to Utah to ski and we never left. We are consumed with the mountains.

What are the most crucial things you have done to grow your business?

There are so many things I do every day to grow the business. The key is really persistence and refinement of the systems. We always try to make it easier for the user.

When is the best time to find new product listings?

New products are listed everyday so the people who always stay on top of our RSS feeds get the worm. If you keep checking back you are bound to score.

When are the best times to find the deepest deals for various seasons?

A few months before the season starts when people are almost thinking about it, but not quite. Like right now is a good time to get deals on ski/snowboard gear and winter outerwear.

What excites you about the industry and what are the future plans?

New sports and technology keep stepping up the game. The gear right now is a big component of pushing the athletic boundaries. It is great to see. We get people involved in new sports for dirt cheap. Without our service a lot of folks would not be able to afford to say try out wakesurfing or downhill mountain biking.

How does GearTrade.com measure accomplishment and growth?

Being an internet company allows us to measure a huge number of goals and stats. We can monitor 100's of metrics and we do.

What do you love to see sell and why?

I buy alot of gear. Mostly skis. I have to admit, I don't sell much gear. I hold onto my gear for friends who come into town gear-less and want to get after it.

Is there anything else you would like customers to know about GearTrade.com?

Selling your Gear is super easy. We have streamlined the process so it only takes a few minutes. You can even use your iPhone. It's free to signup and list your gear and you only pay when your gear sells. We keep it simple for ya.
